Based upon the unusual instrumentation of lap steel guitar, bass clarinet through electronics, harmonium, flutes and drums, the music and sound of Red Largo was born out of the creation of music for the theatre performance “Anthropos Ex (Machina)” in Berlin during the winter 2022-23. Under the conceptual direction of Sonja Kessner – the writer/director of the theatre play – seasoned musicians Fredrik Kinbom (Gemma Ray, Gurrumul, Ned Collette), Andreas Dormann (Moka Efti Orchestra, Ben Becker) and Chris Farr (Sophie Auster, Michelle Gurevich) created a musical language very much their own. During one fruitful session at Berlin’s Candy Bomber Studio, several tracks with a large portion of improvisation were recorded and later developed into the band’s first album Transmitting.
Released in February 2024, Transmitting was very well received in the press with reviews in The Wire magazine (UK), Visions (DE), Concerto (AT – 5/5 review), Louder Than War to name a few, gained the band a live session at national German radio station Radioeins and was nominated in three categories for the German Record Critics‘ Award.
Red Largo are currently working on their second album, and will perform live on stage in the theatre production Pop! Andy Warhol & The Velvet Underground at the English Theatre Berlin in April 2025.
